The Basic Yamaha RD200 Model Guide
This is a list of the models thru the 200cc range to the best of my knowledge. This list is UK based. Overseas models details may vary. Yamaha CS3E 200 from the early 70's ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yamaha CS5E. 1972'ish. The bike transforms more into the early RD look. There is NO such thing as a CS4E. The 4 is a very unlucky number in Japan, hence No model 4. Also for some strange reason some CS5's also have a CS3 frame marked frame under close inspection, which does create a lot of model confusion. You will even find this look bike described as a RD in some referance books. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200A 1973/74. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200B. 1974/75 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200C. Appeared in 1976. Strangely I have one registered in 1978. Also this model is the only brochure, along with the RD125, that bears the referance to "DX". This model had painted mudguards for some strange reason.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200D. 1977/78 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200E. 1978/79 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Yamaha RD200. LC look. 1979/80 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the graphic style used on the RD200 from 1975/76 used in Canada/USA
Below is the model Numbers for Yamaha 200's CS2-C --- 238 CS2-E --- 237 CS3-C --- 273 CS3-E --- 293 There is NO 4 - that number is unlucky in Japan CS5E --- 337 RD200 --- 556 RD200 --- 1H9 RD200-DX '78 --- 2R7 RD200 EUROPE. --- 417 RD200C '76 AUSTRALIA. --- 1J1 RD200C '76 USA CANADA. --- 1H6 RD200C NSW AUSTRALIA. --- 585 RD200C USA --- 581 RD200D '77 CANADA. --- 1W9 RD200DX '75 --- 535 RD200DX EUROPE. --- 1E8 RD200E 78 --- 2V2 RD200E USA --- 397 RD200F --- 398 RD200IR '76 MID. EAST --- 1J2 The A and the B were the 397 prefix models with round tanks and TLS brakes The 200A had tank badges from a CS5 (337), the 200Bs had graphics with a locking petrol cap, about the only difference through the model. The American C is basically a B, they never got the coffin tank models. It was styled on the American 400C in French blue. The UK C was the start of the 1E8 range with a coffin tank, blue or orange paintwork and painted fenders. All C's had disk brakes with the caliper if front of the fork legs and pillion pegs on the swing-arm. 397-010101 A (Other Regions) 397-110101 A (Europe) 397-200101 B 581-000101 C (Non-UK) 1E8-000000 C (UK) 1E8-100000 D 1E8-250000 E (Cast wheels) 1E8-200000 E (Spoked wheels) 1E8-300000 F 1E8-400000 G Just to finish the theme off - here is the strange RS200 commuter type bike from the 1980 period. It came with a single carb........ |

Wot you see above is just a basic guide there are many variations around the world. I will try to add more of the model colours and numbers when I can. If you have any information and details to add then please do so below and I will see wot I can do to add to the listing. If you are new and have a question then please ask via the "tech section" or try the forum "search". Many questions repeat so your answer may already be there. If not or No luck then please ask

New to the site but I used to own a RD200E - 1976 (P-Reg) in Blue, back when I was 17 in 1979. Does anyone on here own one or have any photos of one.
I am thinking of trying to find one to buy and restore as a replacement of the one I scrapped in 1980
If anyone knows of one anywhere please let me know?! Cheers pertheswede |

Right - I finally put the 200 guide right after the forum move jumbled it up..
I would be interested to know which bike picture matched the 200E that you had in 76 |

None of the photos match what I had I'm afraid.
This is why I said I have never seen another 1976 200E in a photo or in the flesh since I had mine. I don't remember seeing may others at the time (1979) either??? I think they were quite rare even then and obviously extremely rare now!! |

What did yours look like, did it have a coffin/round tank, disk/drum front brake, rear pegs on swing arm/frame, cast/wire wheels etc? If it wad a disk was the caliper in front of or behind the fork leg?

The closest one is the US RD200B model, although the colour is not quite right. Mine had drum front and rear brakes & a round tank.

I have just aquired a 1973 RD200 on an L-Reg registration at todays Bonham Auction.
What model would this be exactly please? Would it be the RD200A?? Also does anyone have a parts list & workshop manual for it? |

Welcome to the RD200 club where you find a better class of bike.
The Frame/engine number will tell you what model you have, I can't remember off hand what these are for the A and B but they are in the factory service manuals - I have a CD with pdf factory manuals for the RD200A and B amongst others. I can let you have a copy for £1 to cover post and packing if you are a club member or £5 (inc postage) if you are not a club member. You might like to try these links for parts lists: http://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-rd200a-1974-1975_model8518/partslist http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/myyamaha/prompt/L3Nwb3J0L3BhcnRzL2hvbWUuYXNweA==/Parts%20Catalog/starthere.aspx The first link is a commercial site in Holland and the lists are for the Euro models which will have some minor differences (mainly lighting) from UK models. The second link is a Yamaha US site, click on "Proceed to Parts Catalog" then select "Product Line", Year (1975) followed by model and you will get fiche for the US model, again there may be some minor differences. |

OK, here are the details of my "new" bike.
Registered on the 23-03-1973 Frame Number & Engine #'s - *CS3 216 ???* So now I am even more confused
What have I got then? Not an RD200 obviously or? Is this an YCS-3E model bike from 1971/72 that sat around in a showroom for a while then finally sold and registered in March 1973. The thing is I have seen some photos of the CS3 in my Haynes manual and it looks nothing like mine with different engine, tank side panels, shocks, rh front brake plate etc. I also have an RD200 Parts Book (not UK specification) for models that came off the production line in February 1973 and the photo in this looks very similar to mine except for a few cosmetic differences like the side panels that had inset rubber knee pads etc Here are some pics of mine, can anyone identify it please?:-

Just went back to the beginning and read the comments under the CS5E photo and it actually explains the fact that the CS5's have the CS3 stamped on the frame and the confusion it causes, so it looks like I have a late registered CS5E. It should look like the photo in SupeRDels post (purple and white). Do I still qualify as a RD owner as I have just become a member????

It sounds like a D. If it is then the brake caliper will be in front of the fork leg.
The DX designation is confusing, it seems to mean many things depending on who you talk to - it is often used by suppliers to describe any disk braked RD200. |

The CS5E also carries a "CS3" frame and engine prefix for some unknown reason (maybe they had a load of stamped up frames and engines left over in the YAMAHA factory when deciding on a facelift new model 195cc bike ???) I also own a purple and white 1973 (L-Reg) CS5E with the "CS3" prefix. It was a barn find which now needs a new home where it can be restored to former glory. It is an abandoned project as I need the space and it comes with a box full of original NOS and used parts. It will soon go on eBay or contact me direct if anyone's interested on here?
